World No. 1 Rafael Nadal beat 13-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer at the Australian Open in five sets to win his first hardcourt Grand Slam trophy and his sixth overall. He is the first Spaniard to win in Melbourne. Sunday's victory also marks the first time when Nadal won a tournament as the top seed.
Federer missed the chance to match the all-time Grand Slam titles record of 14 held by Pete Sampras. He has now lost five major finals in his career, all to his rival Nadal. In contrast, Sampras lost in four major finals against four different men.
